Festival de Cannes 1994 - 2014

White God

Hungarian writer and director Kornél Mundruczó delivers an interesting mix of drama and fantasy. After a young girl is forced to abandon her beloved dog, she sets out to find and save him from abuse. While Mundruczó succeeds with the drama, his fantasy section fails to live up to the set up of the revolting dogs which was done without the help of CGI. The stunning and deserted Budapest locations adds to the atmosphere but not enough. Young Zsófia Psotta stars with a solid performance along a talented cast of humans and canines. 1001 Films' coverage of the 67th Festival de Cannes.

Exit Marrakech

German writer and director Caroline Link delivered another drama set in Africa, however with mixed results. A German teenager sent to Morocco where he clashes with his estranged father and takes off to the country side which turns into a journey of self-discovery. While the formula story of white Europeans finding themselves in exotic surroundings has plenty of cliches, Link and her talented cast manage to make the best out of it and give the story resonance. Newcomer Samuel Schneider shines in the lead role along a fine supporting cast that includes Ulrich Tukur and Hafsia Herzi. 1001 Films' coverage of the 67th Festival de Cannes.

The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby

Writer and director Ned Benson made his feature debut with this unique drama about the disintegration of a relationship. The aftermath of a couple's life whose relationship was torn apart by a tragedy as they try to move on with their lives. Benson who initially made two films to show the story from the perspective of the couple, his and her, made a third version which combines the two and makes for a more conventional film but the story remains the same. Jessica Chastain and James McAvoy star with outstanding performances along a stellar supporting cast that includes Isabelle Huppert, William Hurt, Ciarán Hinds and Viola Davis amongst others. 1001 Films' coverage of the 67th Festival de Cannes.

Queen and Country

British writer and director John Boorman delivers the sequel to one of his masterpieces, "Hope and Glory"after more than two decades. During the 50's, the young Bill Rohan has grown into a young man and wants to follow his father in military service where he learns some valuable life lessons. Boorman brings humor and wartime back to show the absurdities of life. While the film is nowhere the equal of "Hope and Glory," it's a solid sequel which makes for an entertaining ride into the the past and British humor. Callum Turner makes his feature debut with an stellar supporting cast that includes David Thewlis, Caleb Landry Jones, Richard E. Snow in Paradise

British editor Andrew Hulme made his writing and directing debut with this crime thriller. When a petty criminal's actions kills his best friend, his guilt drives him disillusioned which drives to find solace in Islam. Loosely based on the life of Martin Askew who makes a menacing appearance in the film, Hulme and Askew deliver a gritty film about life in a rough London neighborhood. Frederick Schmidt stars in his first leading role with a strong performance along with Askew, David Spinx and Aymen Hamdouchi. 1001 Films' coverage of the 67th Festival de Cannes.

The Guest

Director Adam Wingard delivers a terrific ride with this thriller which has elements of horror and camp woven into it. A former soldier visits the family of a fallen comrade and becomes entangled in their daily lives but things take an unexpected turn when his background is questioned. Writer Simon Barrett and Wingard use the audience expectations to deliver a playful and enjoyable film which is more about the ride than any real logic. Dan Stevens shines in the lead with a terrific performance. 67th Festival de Cannes

The mother of all festivals which makes it the most important festival in the world. Actually it's four festivals in one, besides the Official Competition, there are also Un Certain Regard, the Semaine Internationale de la Critique (Critic's Week) and the Quinzaine des Réalisateurs (Directors' Forthnight). The festival also has the biggest film market including the Producer's Network for upcoming films.
