Poetry

Korean writer and director Lee Chang-dong returns with another profound and spiritual drama. The story about a single grand-parent who raises her grandson takes a poetry class to find a distraction from her lonely daily routine. However she finds out a beautiful poem derives from pain and suffering beyond anything she ever imagined when she's diagnosed with dementia and her grandson is guilty of a horrendous crime. Chang-dong delivers another original story that works on several levels that's timeless and universal such as the coexistence of good and evil, relationship of creativity and suffering, generational conflict and the clash of cultures amongst others that's quiet an accomplishment for one film alone. The film is anchored by a towering performance by veteran actress Yoon Jeong-hee. YRCinema's coverage of the AFI Fest.
