German writer and director Werner Herzog took on the story of Dieter Dengler twice, first in a documentary in 1997 then again ten years later with this powerful drama. German born Dengler moves to the US to become a pilot and enlists in the Vietnam war only to become a prisoner of war and lives to tell his story of survival. Herzog blends documentary and drama to tell the story of Dengler which doesn't shy away from his gruelling ordeal and shows that "war is hell". Christian Bale stars with a solid and nuanced performance that captures the spirit of Dengler's epic journey.
