French cult director Roger Vadim (...And God Created Woman, Barbarella) adapted the controversial novel by Choderlos de Laclos to a changed setting of the 60's with some major changes but same plot and characters. Among the changes are that Valmont and Merteuil are married which is the first misstep amongst others that even the stunning Jeanne Moreau can't save. Gérard Philipe is seriously miscast as Valmont while a very young Jean-Louis Trintignant makes an impression. Jazz legend Thelonious Monk provides the music.
