Russian writer and director Aleksey Balabanov made an effective drama about the post-Soviet Russia. A young man fresh out of the army goes to St. Petersburg to visit his brother and finds himself caught in a lawless place as a contract killer. Balabanov found the perfect lead in Sergey Bodrov Jr., one the best young actors before his untimely death. The film is a time capsule of an era which doesn't exist anymore since Russia went through drastic changes after the fall of Soviet Union. YRCinema's coverage of films on DVD.
