Dark Matter
Chinese director Chen Shi-Zheng made his debut feature with this impressive drama based on an actual event. A brilliant Chinese student of humble beginnings gets a chance to study cosmology in the US under a famous professor. When his theory on the dark matter in the universe collides with his professors, the professor pulls his support which derails the student psychologically that leads to tragedy. Shi-Zheng's powerful portrait of an overachiever is keenly observed which only falls apart towards the end. Liu Ye gives a solid performance with stellar support from a never better Aidan Quinn and the magnificent Meryl Streep. YRCinema's coverage of films on DVD.
