Through a Glass Darkly

The first film of a trilogy about faith and spirituality that marked a new direction for Ingmar Bergman and cinematographer Sven Nykvist. In this chamber drama, a famous writer is confronted by his daughter with mental problems, her husband and her brother on a island. Bergman's masterful writing and direction along with the stunning cinematography and performances by Harriet Andersson, Gunnar Björnstrand and Max von Sydow and newcomer Lars Passgård make for another outstanding film.
