Daughter of Keltoum
French-Algerian writer and director Mehdi Charef made a moving film about the plight of women in rural Algeria. A young Swiss woman's journey to a desolate mountain village to confront her biological mother leads her to a heartbreaking revelation about herself and her family. Charef delivers a well written and acted film that shows a different side of Algeria rarely seen on cinema far from the big cities or tourist destinations where people still live with cruel and harsh conditions of their environment, untouched from any kind of progress.
