Writer and director Scott Cooper's second feature is a powerful but uneven drama. A tragic accident sends a man to prison that has devastating consequences to his unstable brother and his girlfriend which forced them to make life changing choices. Writers Brad Ingelsby and Cooper have a powerful story which is derailed when the story shifts from family drama to a predictable revenge thriller which severely shortchanges its emotional core. Cooper assembled a terrific cast with Christian Bale and Casey Affleck who are terrific as the troubled brothers along with Zoe Saldana, Woody Harrelson, Willem Dafoe, Forest Whitaker and Sam Shepard in the supporting roles. 1001 Films' coverage of films on DVD.
