British writer and director Rowan Joffe made his feature debut with this thriller based on the classic novel by Graham Greene. A young woman becomes witness to a crime which puts her in danger. While Joffe effectively updates the setting to the 6o's, he fails to give its characters depth or appeal despite a stellar cast including Helen Mirren, Sam Riley and John Hurt. Newcomer Andrea Riseborough shines in the best performance of the film. 1001 Films' coverage of films on DVD.
