Rise of the Planet of the Apes

British director Rupert Wyatt enters the Hollywood franchise with his third feature that should be the start of a lucrative career. An ambitious scientist's attempt to find a cure for Alzheimer's leads him to the discovery of a miracle medicine which gives apes human intelligence while having devastating consequences for humans. After a disastrous attempt by Tim Burton to revive the Planet of the Apes franchise, Wyatt and his cast and crew hit a home run with this spectacular reboot. Instead of going to the first film, they cleverly start with the origin story which makes total sense and builds anticipation for the sequels. The key success to this film and the franchise is the creation of the apes which is by far the best the technology can deliver. Andy Serkis seems to have created an unique niche with his unique ability to create memorable characters with the help of motion capture and CGI. The talented supporting cast includes James Franco, Freida Pinto and Brian Cox in predictable performances. 1001 Films' coverage of current releases.
