When Father Was Away on Business

Serbian director Emir Kusturica explored the 1950's political climate of Yugoslavia through a family with this satire. A young boy describes his surroundings and how his family is torn apart when his philandering father is banished by his own brother-in-law who uses political pretense to get even with him. Kusturica and writer Abdulah Sidran cleverly blend comedy, family drama, and political realism to describe how the political party used to do business with those who were against the regime. The film was made in 1985 when the communist party was still ruling which shows the courageous effort by Kusturica and his talented cast and crew. Kusturica took a more direct approach later to criticize the political system of his country. 1001 Films' coverage of films on DVD.
