Wajma

Afghan writer and director Barmak Akram's second feature fails to deliver the promise of his strong debut. In Kabul a progressive student falls for a waiter but their relationship is quickly caught by the hypocrisy of their culture when she becomes pregnant and he refuses to take responsibility. Despite Akram's noble intentions to shed light on a common problem of women in a male dominated society, the story doesn't show anything new that hasn't been covered in the media. The cast of non-professional actors try their best to rise up to the challenges of the story with only Haji Gul Aser delivering the best performance as the father of Wajma trying to save his honor. 1001 Films' coverage of films on DVD.
