British director Kevin Macdonald (The Last King of Scotland) returned with this old-fashioned adventure tale. In Roman ruled Britain, a young soldier embarks a dangerous journey with his slave to retrieve his father's lost legion emblem to clear his name. There's plenty to admire about Macdonald's film but the convoluted script is all over the place which ultimately derails the film. The similar themed film "Centurion" by Neil Marshall had a tighter focus but fell short elsewhere. Channing Tatum and Jamie Bell star as the master and slave while Mark Strong, Tahar Rahim and Donald Sutherland appear in supporting roles. 1001 Films' coverage of films on DVD.
