If I Want to Whistle, I Whistle
Romanian writer and director Florin Serban made a solid debut with this bleak drama. Two weeks before his release from prison, a teenager learns about his estranged mother's return which has devastating consequences. Serban proves that Romanian cinema is alive and fertile as he joins the new wave with solid storytelling. The mostly non-professional cast are flawless, specially George Pistereanu who's outstanding as the lead under pressure. While the story is bleak like most in the region, Serban infuses it with an explosive energy that suits the film well. 1001 Films' coverage of films on DVD.
