Indian director Girish Karnad adapted the Sanskrit play "The Golden Toy Chariot" for this love story. Through a coincidence, a royal courtesan falls in love with a poor poet which has unexpected consequences. Set in 6 AD India, at the time when the Kama Sutra was written, Karnad brings the lavish period alive by mixing the play with musical interludes without losing sight.
