Sisters of the Gion
Japanese master Kenji Mizoguchi shows generational conflict through two different sisters. When a wealthy patron goes bankrupt, he seeks refuge at his loyal geisha in the Gion district of Kyoto, much to the disdain of her younger sister who wants to become a geisha herself. Therefore she schemes a plan to replace him with a wealthy patron without the geisha's knowledge. Mizoguchi revisits the fallen women of society where the sisters are used and abandoned by men, each of them in her own way regardless of their character. Mizoguchi was on his way to join the greats of cinema with several masterpieces. 1001 Films' coverage of films on DVD.
