Richard III

British director Richard Loncraine gave the Shakespeare drama a bold interpretation with the help of Ian McKellen who co-wrote and stars with a riveting performance. A murderous aristocrat schemes a devious plan to become King at the cost of murdering his own family one by one. Loncraine updates the classic play to a fictional fascist England in the 30's that resembles Germany and Hitler in many ways. McKellen leads an stellar cast that includes Annette Bening, Jim Broadbent, Kristin Scott Thomas, Maggie Smith, Robert Downey Jr. and Nigel Hawthorne amongst others. 1001 Films' coverage of films on DVD.
