Dodes'ka-den

Japanese master Akira Kurosawa made his first color film with this bittersweet tale about people at the margins of society. Through several stories, we get to know a group of slum-dwellers each trying to survive and cope with daily ordeals. A mentally retarded boy and his mother, an abused girl with her uncle, two alcoholic friends and their wives amongst others. While it's the most stylized of Kurosawa's film, the characters are real and sincere. Kurosawa was fully involved with the production design and cinematography which are glorious in dazzling colors.
