Byzantium

Irish director Neil Jordan returns to the horror genre with another vampire tale. Two female vampires on the run try to survive in a coastal town where attract the attention of several men. Whatever Jordan's attraction was for the Moira Buffini play who also adapted for the screen, it fails to generate any kind of excitement. The vampire genre has been reinvented several times in the last several decades both on the big screen and TV but this treatment goes in the wrong direction from the start and never recovers. The talents of Saoirse Ronan, Gemma Arterton and Sam Riley are wasted which is a shame. Jordan's last attempt with the genre, "Interview with the Vampire" was more successful and should return to his roots where he made his best work. 1001 Films' coverage of current releases.
