Hysteria

Director Tanya Wexler's third feature took her to Victorian England for this romantic comedy. A young and idealistic doctor treating women diagnosed with hysteria accidentally invents the first vibrator while falling in love with the strong headed sister of his fiancee. While the unique and original story had potential, Wexler failed to find the right balance between humor and drama in this rather tame film which opts for the usual cliches. Hugh Dancy and Maggie Gyllenhaal gave their best in the leads along with the supporting cast that includes Jonathan Pryce, Felicity Jones and Rupert Everett. 1001 Films' coverage of films on DVD.
