War and Peace

Veteran director King Vidor's attempt of the epic novel by Russian author Leo Tolstoy captures some of the grandeur but fails to live up to other epic films of the same stature. The paths of three aristocrats crosses several times during peace and war in Moscow before and after the Napoleon's invasion of 1812. The international production by Carlo Ponti and Dino De Laurentiis suffers from the miscasting of the two leads which includes Henry Fonda and Mel Ferrer who can't match the charm and grace of Audrey Hepburn whose presence remains one of the highlights of the film besides its production design and cinematography by Jack Cardiff. 1001 Films' coverage of films on DVD.
