Killer Joe

Director William Friedkin reunited with writer Tracy Letts for this crime drama based on his play. A debt ridden man and his father hire a contract killer to murder his mother in order to claim her life insurance but the killer wants his sister as a retainer which proves a fatal mistake for everyone. Friedkin's over-the-top approach infuses some kinetic energy into this study of low lives which is further enhanced by solid performances. Matthew McConaughey leads the strong ensemble cast that includes Emile Hirsch, Juno Temple, Thomas Haden Church and Gina Gershon, all playing despicable characters. 1001 Films' coverage of films on DVD.
