Thérèse Raquin

French master Marcel Carné turned the novel by Émile Zola into a film noir by setting it in Lyon of the 50's. An unhappily married woman finds love with a Italian truck driver which has devastating consequences. While the film got lost before arrival of the French New Wave, it still holds up thanks to Carné's direction and Simone Signoret who delivered another terrific performance as the tragic heroine. The supporting cast includes Raf Vallone as the truck driver, Jacques Duby and Sylvie as Thérèse's husband/cousin and aunt/mother-in-law. 1001 Films' coverage of films on DVD.
