Young Girls in Black
French writer and director Jean-Paul Civeyrac takes a look at teenage suicide with this drama. Teenager Noemie finds herself alienated from the world around her and nobody knows what to do with her. She finds a connection with the vulnerable Priscilla who feels the same. The two girls start a friendship that alienate them more from their surroundings and start preparing to end their lives. The film has some moments that shows the reasons for the girls but fails to dig deeper at the problems. It would have helped if the audience could relate more but the girls are kept at a distance that makes them unlikable. Also Civeyrac's treatment lacks universal appeal because the problem is widespread throughout the Western world. YRCinema's coverage of films at the 63rd Festival de Cannes.
