Grand Illusion
French master Jean Renoir made this masterpiece about the nature of war which remains a timeless classic. During WWI, two French officers attempt several escapes from German POW camps. While on the surface it's a war film, Renoir is more concerned about the human drama and implications of war. Renoir's brilliant film captures the different behaviors between the classes on both sides where enemies of the same class have more in common than with their own people of lower classes. The film is about the human interaction and how the world changed after WWI. Renoir assembled a terrific cast including Jean Gabin and Erich von Stroheim in towering performances.
