The Cow
Iranian writer and director Dariush Mehrjui delivered his best work with his second feature which is a drama set in a remote village. After the beloved cow of a villager dies in his absence, the entire village tries to come up with a solution which only makes things worse leading to tragic consequences. A milestone of Iranian cinema which opened the doors to the West but also allowed the Islamic revolution to endorse cinema instead of shutting it down which speaks volumes about the power of the art form which can transcend political and religious borders. Ezzatolah Entezami gives a powerful performance as the man obsessed with his pet cow whose love drives him into madness. 1001 Films' coverage of films on DVD.
