Thérèse

Veteran French writer and director Claude Miller's final film is another literary adaptation. A woman of wealth and privilege marries a man of her class without hesitation or love until she snaps at the passionate love of her best friend and sister-in-law which sends her to a downward spiral that changes the course of her life. Based on the novel by François Mauriac, Miller's approach is cold blooded and distant to reflect the state of mind of his trapped heroine who's forced to act the way she does. Audrey Tautou stars with a reserved and nuanced performance along with Gilles Lellouche and Anaïs Demoustier as the siblings she spends her life with. 1001 Films' coverage of the 56th San Francisco International Film Festival.
