After Lucia

Mexican writer and director Michel Franco's second feature deals with a family attempt to overcome a traumatic event which paves the way for more tragedy. After a tragic event, a man and his teenage daughter move to another city to start fresh but instead find themselves tangled with new problems which has tragic consequences. Franco meticulously unfolds a gripping story where a family can't escape everyday grief and violence that tears them apart. Franco's depiction of bullying strikes a raw nerve which is utterly disturbing because it's happening everyday at every school to some extent. Newcomer Tessa Ia gives a riveting performance as the teenage girl viciously bullied by her classmates. 1001 Films' coverage of the 56th San Francisco International Film Festival.
