Korean director Hur Jin-ho adaptation of the classic French novel to the 1930's China seems inspired and proves the timelessness of the story but fails in its treatment which is a shame. A scheming society woman and a dashing womanizer join forces for a game of love and seduction which leads to tragic consequences. While the characters and plot remain the same, the setting is new but the over-the-top stylization adds too much artifice that takes away from the dramatic impact. The attractive cast includes Cecilia Cheung,
Jang Dong-gun and
Ziyi Zhang star as the three main characters with decent to solid performances. 1001 Films' coverage of films on DVD.
