The Magician

Legendary Swedish writer and director Ingmar Bergman made one of his most personal films with this drama. When a town's police and doctor want to expose a traveling magician and his troupe as charlatans, a battle of wits ensues where everybody tries unmask the other in order to reveal what's beneath the masks. Bergman shows the epic battle between the arts and the sciences where the artists are ridiculed by the scientists yet the artists manage to outsmart them. Through the magic of cinema with all of its tools, Bergman takes a scathing attacks on the scientific-minded disbelievers that has belittled artists for centuries. The stellar cast includes several of Bergman regulars such as Max von Sydow, Ingrid Thulin, Gunnar Björnstrand, Bibi Andersson and Erland Josephson. 1001 Films' coverage of films on DVD.
