Italian writer and director Matteo Garrone takes on reality television after brilliantly demystifying the Mafia with his riveting "Gomorrah." A Neapolitan fishmonger gradually loses touch with reality after he applies for a reality show. Garrone's cautionary tale is light in tone but infused a good dose of tragedy about the global phenomenon of reality tv. The incarcerated Aniello Arena who serves a two decade prison term makes his feature debut with a brilliant performance as a family man whose sincere attempt costs him more than his sanity. Loredana Simioli is terrific as the wife along with solid supporting cast of mostly non-professional actors. The cinematography by Marco Onorato and score by Alexandre Desplat also stands out among the accomplished crew. 1001 Films' coverage of the 65th Festival de Cannes.
