Blackthorn

Spanish writer turned director Mateo Gil made this alternative sequel to the classic western "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid" refuting the ending of that story which adds to the already daunting task. Butch Cassidy survived under the name of Blackthorn in Bolivia till his old age but desires to return home which gets him in trouble with local bandits. There's nothing wrong with the story but touching on a classic film with iconic characters shortchanges it. It would have been wiser to hint and pay tribute instead of going head on that proves fatal which is a shame despite a solid performance by Sam Shepard along with the stunning locations. The cast includes Eduardo Noriega and Stephen Rea in supporting roles. 1001 Films' coverage of films on DVD.
