Sanctum

Australian director Alister Grierson shortchanges a terrific concept with his second feature. A group of cave explorers get trapped in an unexplored cave system which proves deadly for many of them. Inspired by a true story and set at the Esa'ala Caves which is one of the last unexplored caves in the world, the writers and director missed a great opportunity to make a terrific thriller. Instead they have weak script full of cliches and unbelievable characters that border on caricature. Despite its many flaws, one can sense the terrifying concept. The cast includes Richard Roxburgh and Ioan Gruffudd in the leads. 1001 Films coverage of films on DVD.
