Mr. Turner

British master Mike Leigh returns to period drama with another immaculate film. The private life of British painter J.M.W. Turner is explored through the people close to him which includes his father, his maid/mistress, his in-laws and his late companion. While the film is not as entertaining as Topsy-Turvy, it's a meticulous film as you would expect from Leigh who brings his no nonsense approach to the period details which gives an accurate account of the era without stylizing it as most films do. Timothy Spall stars with another terrific performance along a first rate supporting cast as well as Leigh's usual creative team. 1001 Films' coverage of the 67th Festival de Cannes.
