Timbuktu

Mauritanian writer and director Abderrahmane Sissako returns with his fourth feature which another powerful and heartbreaking drama. A nomadic family find their livelihood threatened by the arrival of militant Islamic rebels who terrorize their community. Sissako shows how the rebels use religion to manipulate their way to power when ignored by the community. The talented cast of professionals and non-professionals shine in this visually striking film which is also timely. 1001 Films' coverage of the 67th Festival de Cannes.
