Winter Sleep

Turkish master Nuri Bilge Ceylan delivers another masterful film with this complex and nuanced chamber drama. During the off season at an idyllic resort a generational and class conflict erupts where the masks are lifted and true identities are revealed which includes the wealthy resort owner, his younger wife, the local imam and his brother's troubled family. Ceylan and his wife Ebru deliver brutally honest characters which reflects the society in general beyond the local setting which has universal appeal and timely relevance. The splendid cast which includes Haluk Bilginer and Melisa Sözen disappear into their characters which makes foreign films a pleasure to watch and discover. As usual with Ceylan's films the landscape plays a crucial character which is splendidly captured. 1001 Films' coverage of the 67th Festival de Cannes.
