House of Tolarance
French writer and director Bertrand Bonello looks back at glory days of prostitution at the turn of century Paris. Several women work at the upscale brothel called L'Apollonide where they are trapped by debt despite their wealthy clients. Bonello's film is feast for the eyes but poorly written that none of the characters make any impact. It's a shallow take on the oldest trade which has lost its Belle Epoque glamour but not its dangers. The talented cast including Hafsia Herzi, Noémie Lvovsky and Louis-Do de Lencquesaing are used as props without any character development whatsoever. 1001-Films coverage of the 64th Festival de Cannes.
