The Conformist

Legendary Italian writer and director Bernardo Bertolucci's first masterpiece is one of the greatest films of all time. Set in late 1930's, an upper class man conforms to fascism during Mussolini's power where he's recruited to kill his former professor in exile, the head of the anti-fascist resistance group. Based on the novel by Alberto Moravia, Bertolucci takes a look at the root of fascism through this character study. Stellar performances by Jean-Louis Trintignant, Stefania Sandrelli and Dominique Sanda, groundbreaking cinematography and production design by Vittorio Storaro and Ferdinando Scarfiotti along with an haunting score by Georges Delerue makes this dazzling masterpiece a milestone in cinema. 1001-Films coverage of the 64th Festival de Cannes.
