Midnight in Paris

After breathing new life into his career with the European travelogue films, it was only a question of time before Woody Allen would deliver his valentine to Paris. A Hollywood writer dreaming of becoming a novelist finds professional and personal inspiration in Paris. Allen's love for the city of lights is evident including his preferred decade but the story fails to live up to his previous and superior films such as "Match Point" or "Vicky Cristina Barcelona." Besides the thin plot full of cliches, the film is overwhelmed by the over-saturated post-card images and overbearing score. There are some promising moments here and there. The leads Owen Wilson and Rachel McAdams suffer from their under-written roles while the supporting cast including Michael Sheen, Marion Cotillard, Adrian Brody and Kathy Bates fare better. 1001-Films coverage of the 64th Festival de Cannes.
